Weather WarrantyContributor: Jerri Schillinger State taking applications for 'weather warranty' Florida's official tourism marketing organization is taking applications for event insurance, though it won't begin advertising the program until next month. The supplemental business insurance is being offered at no cost for meetings from August through October 2005, the height of hurricane season. Visit Florida's "weather warranty" is part of an intensified marketing campaign approved by its board of directors. Visit Florida received an additional $4.75 million in state funding in January to combat negative perceptions of Florida after the hurricanes. Tracy Dunaway, director of sales for Visit Florida, says eight applications have been made for the event insurance since they began taking applications Feb. 21. The insurance will pay off an organizer who has an event disrupted by hurricanes. Organizers can get insurance at the $100,000, $150,000 or $200,000 levels, Dunaway says. The marketing of the program has thus far been limited to getting the word out to the press, says Dunaway, but beginning in April Visit Florida will launch an advertising campaign concentrated in tourism industry trade publications. Tourism is Florida's No. 1 industry. It has an annual economic impact of $52 billion and employs more than 870,000 Floridians.
